Building Research Competence Among Fellows: PCHTM Holds Workshop on Systematic Review & Meta Analysis, Data Analysis Planning, and Publication

By Rene A. Amadore Jr. (UP-PGH Hematology Fellow-in-Training)

Manila, Philippines – October 25, 2025. The Philippine College of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine (PCHTM) successfully held a Research Workshop on Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, Data Analysis Planning, and Publication for its fellows-in-training at the Bayview Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila. The activity was organized by the Committee on Research.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the research capacity of hematology fellows and equip them with essential tools in evidence generation, analysis, and dissemination. Dr. Manuel Vidal Jr. and Dr. Mark Prado Jr. served as resource speakers for the day. Their sessions covered the step-by-step process of developing a systematic review, designing a sound data analysis plan, and preparing manuscripts for publication. Both speakers underscored the importance of well-planned research design and statistical analysis as foundations of impactful scientific work.

Throughout the lectures and interactive discussions, the fellows gained practical insights on transforming clinical observations into research questions, identifying knowledge gaps, and interpreting data in ways that inform patient care. The speakers emphasized that publication should not be viewed merely as a fellowship requirement but as a professional responsibility that contributes to the advancement of hematology and transfusion medicine in the country.

By the end of the workshop, participants expressed renewed confidence in writing, analyzing, and publishing their research projects. They also shared enthusiasm about pursuing studies that address local gaps in hematologic care and practice.

The event reflected PCHTM’s continuing commitment to nurturing clinician-researchers capable of generating quality evidence and advancing the standards of hematology practice in the Philippines—an effort that remains vital in a rapidly evolving field.
