Multi-Stakeholder Consultation Highlights Urgent Need for Improved Hemophilia Care in the Philippines

[Pasig city, 09 Jan 2025] – A Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on Government-Funded Treatment for Hemophilia was recently held, bringing together key stakeholders including government officials, healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and industry representatives. The meeting underscored the urgent need for improved access to comprehensive and affordable treatment for individuals living with hemophilia in the Philippines. This initiative was organized by Hemophilia Advocates of the Philippines (HAP) led by Miss Andrea Trinidad. Philippine College of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine (PCHTM) president, Dr Flordeluna Z. Mesina and Dr Angelina Mirasol from the PCHTM-Hemostasis and Thrombosis Working Group joined this important meeting and participated in the meaningful discussions and workshop.

Hemophilia, a rare genetic disorder that impairs blood clotting, poses significant challenges for affected individuals, leading to spontaneous bleeding episodes that can cause severe joint damage, internal bleeding, and even death.

Key issues discussed during the consultation included:

  • Limited access to treatment: Participants emphasized the critical shortage of accessible and affordable treatment options for hemophilia patients across the country.

  • Inadequate infrastructure: Many regions lack the necessary infrastructure and healthcare professionals with specialized training in hemophilia management.

  • Financial barriers: High costs of treatment, including medication, specialized care, and long-term management, pose significant financial burdens for patients and their families.

  • Lack of awareness and education: Limited awareness among the general public, healthcare providers, and even within the hemophilia community hinders timely diagnosis and appropriate management.

The consultation aimed to:

  • Advocate for increased government funding: Participants called for increased government support for hemophilia care, including the provision of essential medications, subsidizing treatment costs, and expanding access to specialized care centers.

  • Strengthen healthcare systems: The need for improved healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of dedicated hemophilia treatment centers and the training of specialized healthcare professionals, was strongly emphasized.

  • Enhance patient support: Participants discussed the importance of providing comprehensive patient support services, including psychosocial support, access to rehabilitation services, and financial assistance programs.

  • Raise public awareness: The meeting highlighted the crucial role of public awareness campaigns to educate the public, healthcare providers, and policymakers about hemophilia and its management.

The Multi-Stakeholder Consultation served as an important platform for stakeholders to share their perspectives, identify critical challenges, and develop collaborative solutions to improve the lives of individuals living with hemophilia in the Philippines.
